Stumped? 3 Tips For Getting Rid Of That Unsightly Stump You Have In Your Yard

Posted on: 9 May 2016

If you've recently removed a dead tree from your property, you might be wondering what to do with the stump that was left behind. Stumps left in your yard are unsightly and they can cause safety hazards, especially if they're in an area where people can trip over them. Here are three simple ways to get rid of the stump.

Dig it Out

If the stump that was left behind is not too big, you can dig it out. You'll need a shovel, a hacksaw, some goggles and a pair of gloves. Beginning as close to the stump as possible, begin digging trench around the perimeter of the stump. Once you've dug the trench, use your shovel to remove as much of the dirt as possible. Continue digging until you've exposed the main roots.

Take your hacksaw and begin cutting through each of the exposed roots. This will allow you to dig further down beneath the stump. Use your saw to cut through other roots that you come in contact with. Once you've dug down beneath the stump, and cut through all the roots, you'll be able to push the stump over on its side and remove it from the hole.

Burn it Out

If the stump is too big to dig out, you may want to burn it out. For this approach to stump removal, you'll need a shovel, goggles, gloves, a small amount of kindling wood and some matches. You should also have a garden hose nearby to put the fire out when you're done.

Use your shovel to dig a trench around the perimeter of your stump. Place kindling wood around the stump and use your matches to start the fire. Allow the fire to burn until the stump is no longer visible. You may need to place additional kindling on the fire to keep the flames hot throughout the process. Once the stump is gone, wait until the embers have cooled down and then fill the hole in with dirt.

Hire a Professional

If you've tried digging and burning but the stump is still there, it might be time to hire a professional. Professional stump removers, like those at AAA Tree Surgeon Inc and similar locations, will be able to grind the stump down using an industrial stump grinder. With this process, you won't have to worry about hauling the stump away because it will be turned into saw dust you can use in your garden.

You don't have to get stuck with an unsightly stump in your yard. The suggestions provided above will help you get rid of the stump once and for all.
